HABITAT AND RANGE:

South America; Old Wold tropics and southern latitudes;

DESCRIPTION:

20-25 cm; bill long, curved and swollen at tip; neck short; wings broad; tail short; toes long; female larger than male in one species;

FOOD:

feed principally on invertebrates, and/or aquatic vertebrates

BREEDING:

male takes larger role in parental care; 4 eggs in concealed ground-nest.
