DESCRIPTION:

50 cm; plumage loose; ashy gray barred with brown and darker gray; short neck and large head with long crest; bill medium length, tapered; wings broad, rounded; tail long, rounded; powder-downs; solitary, largely nocturnal; nearly flightless, prefers to run on ground, punctuating progress with abrupt stops;

FOOD:

eats inverts, prefers earthworms;

BREEDING:

sexes similar though male slightly larger; monogamous; 1 egg in clutch; biparental care.
