0.15 to 1.5 kg; pointed bill; males slightly larger; wings short; tarsi laterally compressed; toes lobed with flattened claws; skillful divers and hesitant but generally competent fliers;

FOOD:

diet of fish and aquatic invertebrates;

BREEDING:

floating nest; 2-6 pale unmarked eggs; both parents care for young; monogamous; young leave nest on parent backs soon after hatching
