Ichthyology at Cornell

There are a number of organismal or integrative labs at Cornell in which fishes are the principle organism of study. Colleagues in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology who have worked on some aspect of the ecology or systematics of fishes are: Alex Flecker, John Friel, Nelson Hairston and Jim Morin. In our neighbor, Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, Carl Hopkins studies electric fishes and Andy Bass works on sound production/reception in fishes.

The Department of Natural Resources at Cornell includes a complementary program on Fisheries and Aquatic Science with faculty Cliff Kraft, Patrick Sullivan, and Mark Bain on campus and senior research associates Ed Mills and Lars Rudstam at the Oneida Lake Biological Station near Syracuse. In Veterinary Medicine, Paul Bowser does research in fish pathology and is a consulting veterinarian for those of us rearing live fish for research purposes. The Biological Field Station at Oneida Lake (see the Department of Natural Resources) and The Shoals Marine Lab are potentially important field facilities for ichthyological projects.
