Character evolution in a phylogenetic context.

I am also interested in the overall phylogeny of fishes as well as in understanding the evolution of phenotypic characters within a phylogenetic framework. Phylogenetic analyses of fishes using morphological, molecular, and/or paleontological data have been conducted by myself and my students at several levels, from relationships of species and higher taxa to relationships of populations within species (Normark et al., 1991; Boughton et al. 1991; Lovejoy 1999). A number of projects have been pursued in which the evolution of morphology (e.g. jaw morphology; color patterns) of fishes has been elucidated through study of the feature and its development in a phylogenetic context (Boughton et al. 1991; McClure 1998; Lovejoy 1999).
