Petra Deane-Coe

Petra is currently a PhD candidate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, co-advised by Irby and Rick Harrison. She is motivated to understand genomic processes underlying adaptation and divergence in North American sparrows, inspired by the “diverse-but-drab” assemblage of grassland birds she grew up watching on the Canadian prairies. Her current project investigates genomic signatures of rapid adaptive divergence between inland and coastal subspecies of Swamp Sparrow (Melospiza georgiana georgiana and M. g. nigrescens).

Methodological interests: Collecting holistic data series (natural history, behavior, audio, blood, tissue, skins), and using locus-specific patterns of introgression in natural hybrid zones to identify candidate adaptive genes.
