A double-sided handout summary is now available of the key points and figures from the 2015 publication "Methane emissions and climatic warming risk from hydraulic fracturing and shale gas development: implications for policy" and the 2014 publication "A bridge to nowhere: methane emissions and the greenhouse gas footprint of natural gas".

Howarth Lab at CERF

We just arrived back from the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation biennial conference, held this year in Portland Oregon. Five members from the lab presented three oral presentations and two posters on coastal eutrophication and nitrogen pollution, methods of monitoring loss of eelgrass habitat, isotopic indictors of eelgrass health, nitrogen and phosphorus loads to the coastal zone, and characterizing nutrient loading around the globe.

Howarth & Ingraffea Shale Gas Lecture

On April 14th, Bob and Tony Ingraffea gave a lecture at Cornell to celebrate the 4th anniversary of the publication of their first paper on the greenhouse gas footprint of shale gas and to give an update on the data presented in that work: Still A Bridge to Nowhere: Methane Emissions and the Greenhouse Gas Footprint of Natural Gas. Updated methane emissions review

Our paper has been published in Energy Science & Engineering which reviews the research on methane emissions from natural gas systems conducted since 2011 in the context of our 2011 paper and the fifth assessment from the IPCC, released in 2013. Dana Caulton wins award from DRI!

Congratulations to our colleague Dana Caulton, graduate student at Purdue and lead author on our recent paper in PNAS "Toward a better understanding and quantification of methane emissions from shale gas development", who was recently names the winner of the 2014 Peter B. Wagner Memorial Award for Women in Atmospheric Sciences. This award is made possible by the Desert Research Institute (DRI).

UNEP Report on Sustainable Land Use

A report was recently produced by the Land and Soils Working Group of the International Resource Panel, on which Bob is one of the lead authors. It explores how the management of land-based biomass production and consumption can be developed towards a higher degree of sustainability across different scales: from the sustainable management of soils on the field to the sustainable management of global land use as a whole. CERF Conference Presentations

Last week, Dennis, Melanie, and Elizabethe represented the lab by giving presentations at the 22nd Biennial Conference of the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation, held in San Diego, CA. Additionally, Neil Ganju and Melanie accepted the Pritchard Award on behalf of all authors of our 2012 paper entitled "Tidal and groundwater fluxes to a shallow, microtidal estuary: constraining inputs through field observations and hydrodynamic modeling."
