Memories

Some notable memories from Kenya...

  • Arriving at Heathrow Airport in London minutes after the London terrorist attacks of July 7th. Frantic calls to parents assuring them we were okay, since we were scheduled to arrive just before the attack and were planning on going to London during the layover. Luckily, our plane was delayed. We all spent the day in the airport bonding.
  • Seeing a cheetah the first day in Kenya, on the drive to the El Karama Ranch.
  • Watching a cheetah (night drive at El Karama), and later, a full pride of lions (Lake Nakuru National Park) at fresh kills. Setting a new world record for number of pictures taken of a single event.
  • Defending our camp against roaming troops of baboons at Lake Nakuru. We were not as successful against one "special" group of tourists, who left a bigger mess than the baboons.
  • Learning songs in Kiswahili with Wilson and Gabriel, our two Kenyan guides.
  • Cooking curried goat meat and camel stew for dinner at the Aberdares and learning the fine art of making chapatis and ugali, two traditional Kenyan flour-based dishes.
  • Fifteen people lifting a minivan out of rut. Then doing it again 10 minutes later. Finally turning around and backtracking once we realized the road up the mountain was impassible.
