Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Undergraduate Program

At Cornell, there is a single undergraduate major in Biological Sciences, in which the Department of E&EB participates. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is one of 11 possible Programs of Study within the major. Our undergraduate curriculum meets the needs of a diverse clientele. During the 1999-2000 academic year, 1770 students were enrolled in E&EB courses. More than half of these students were enrolled in four important introductory courses: BioEE 207 (evolutionary biology for non-majors), BioEE 261 (introductory ecology), BioEE 274 (vertebrate biology), and BioEE 278 (evolutionary biology for majors). In addition to our large introductory courses, E&EB offers a broad array of smaller upper-level courses that allow interested undergraduates (and some graduate students) to gain an intimate knowledge of more advanced topics in ecology, evolutionary biology, and organismal biology. The accompanying figures illustrate our course sequences in those three areas. We include a number of courses taught by instructors with appointments in other departments; these courses fit within the core curriculum in ecology and evolutionary biology.
